Parent Involvement Opportunities

Volunteers procedures and policies are affected by COVID-19 protocols. Stay tuned to district and school updates by keeping your email and contact information up to date and checking the Birney Buzz on your email and school website.

Families have many opportunities to be involved at their children's school site (for example, School Site Council English Learner Advisory Committee, special events, fundraising events, parent organizations and in classrooms) and at the district level (for example, district councils/committees such as GATE District Advisory Committee (GATE DAC), District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC), and special events).

We encourage families to support their children at home by communicating clear expectations about learning school.

Birney Elementary staff are committed to obtaining community resources for our school and invite all constituencies to assist us in the education of our students. If you would like to donate your time, expertise, or funds to our school please call our office.

All volunteers are required to meeting all volunteer requirements which include Megan's Law clearance, TB test, and completed volunteer application. Families interested in learning more about volunteering are encouraged to contact the office.

Learning About Opportunities for Family Involvement

We love having our families involved at Birney, but we also understand how many families have incredible demands on their time and cannot always be present at school. We have attempted to streamline communication for you in these ways:

  • School news and mail is sent home regularly. Please read the Birney Buzz newsletter and the attached fliers, and make sure to call or email us if you have questions. Some classrooms send home additional classroom-specific or student-specific information.
Contact: Ms. Amanda, Principal, [email protected]
    619-497-3500
  • Connect-Ed phone calls and emails are sent home regularly to inform and remind you about what is going on at your child's school. Phone and email contacts are updated through the office, so please make sure your information is kept current.
  • Family Fridays, held the around the first or second Friday of the month, allow you to visit your child's classroom and attend a monthly principal's presentation. Details about these events are included in the Birney Buzz and in the calendar.
  • The Family-School Partnership Act is a California law that allows parents, grandparents and guardians to take time off from work to participate in their children's school or child care activities. You may take off up to 40 hours each year (up to eight hours in any calendar month) to participate in activities at your child's school or day care facility if the following criteria are met:
    • You are a parent, guardian or grandparent who has custody of a child enrolled in a California public or private school, kindergarten through grade 12, or licensed child day care facility.
    • You work for a business that has 25 or more employees at the same location
