Reminder: All Students Eat for Free! Check Out Our School’s Menu of Fresh, Tasty Items Available in Birney's Cafeteria
Salad bars are the heart of the meal program at San Diego Unified, featuring a variety of fruits and veggies often sourced from local farmers. Every Wednesday, students can try a new locally-grown, organic produce item that changes monthly through the Harvest of the Month program.

San Diego Unified Food & Nutrition Services is committed to serving nutritious and tasty meals for students, offering a balance of healthy versions of student favorites mixed with scratch-prepared dishes and Southern California flavors. Keep an eye out for scratch made salsas, sauces and salad dressings to bring up the flavor on your lunch tray throughout the year.
Cafeteria, Breakfast and Lunch Behaviors
BE RESPONSIBLE, BE RESPECTFUL, BE A PROBLEM-SOLVER
Respect yourself, respect others, respect cafeteria area and cafeteria staff
Ask an adult for help when you need it
Follow adult directions at all times
Walk at all times (games are an exception - see GAMES/PLAYGROUND)
LEAVE ALL DISTRACTIONS AT HOME - NO CANDY or GUM in lunches
Use self-management, social and communication skills:
- In lunch area stay seated
- Raise hand to be dismissed or follow adult instructions to be dismissed
- Keep your items in your own space so you can clean-up after yourself
- Stack trays properly
- Take responsibility for your actions
- Use a low-voice at tables, no yelling or screaming
- Say please, thank-you, excuse me
- Make room for others
Breakfast
Families sit with their child while they eat free breakfast on the lunch tables. Thank you for making sure the area is clean when child is finished.
Lunch
Make sure that your child can open and close his/her/their lunch containers if they bring lunch from home. Free lunch is also available for every child.
